How do I choose a quality tutor?
Tutors with teaching experience
Experienced tutors are often quicker to identify problems their students are having in learning. Such tutors are also more likely to have worked with students with different backgrounds and personalities. However, it may still be worthwhile to try out tutors with less experience, especially if something about their background or experience catches your eye.
Tutors with certifications
Other than teaching experience, you can also choose tutors who are certified instructors. Aside from indicating proficiency in the language that the tutor teaches, such certifications are a sign that the tutor understands how to help students to maximize their learning.
Can lessons be customized for students?
Before students take their first lesson, we encourage them to discuss their learning needs and goals with their tutors. This helps give you a feel for what to expect, and is also a great opportunity for you to see if a tutor is suitable for you.

We feel very lucky to have found Ms Kar (in mid December) to help us achieve our goal within a short period of time (4 lessons in less than 10 days). I firstly communicated with Ms Kar our target to use the Christmas break for my daughter to prepare and pass the G5 theory exam. Ms Kar is very flexible and friendly, quickly set out a plan to focus on the topics my daughter needs more help and tailored made the materials/ notes for her. All her lessons are well prepared, efficient and effective. Although my initial target was to pass, Ms Kar is still very supportive, enthusiastic to answer any questions we have, and teach my daughter many easy and useful systematic methods to tackle each type of questions, eg. the big sections on keys, intervals and chords, to confidently secure the marks. No need to "deadly" memorise things. Ms Kar has helped my daughter obtain distinctions for practice papers, boosting her confidence (just did the real exam today). She is very patient, easygoing and her lessons are interesting (always showing her smiley face). Although we are based in different countries, the online lessons with Ms Kar are very effective and enjoyable. Time is allocated well for the topics/ papers to be covered. Highly recommended. We feel blessed and hope my daughter would learn from her again. Thank you so much, Ms Kar.

The lesson started with playing the song “Got those Blues” and learned a new song “Chasing the Blues away”. Both songs have the same formula for Blues and Teacher Tina explained the in details. It was a good lesson.

Each prospective instructor must undergo a rigorous selection process before becoming an AT Piano tutor, after which their performance is constantly monitored. Try a class and start learning today.
Q3. How do I choose my Piano tutor?

If you have a clear idea of your criteria for choosing a tutor - such as any specific learning objectives, target cost for tutoring, etc. - you can use the search function to quickly find a tutor who suits your needs, and select “book trial” to set up your first Piano online lesson.

If you don't have time to find a tutor or aren't sure where to start, we can help with recommendations. Try using our tutor recommendation tool here, which will provide you with tutor matches according to your selected needs.
Q4. What's the right learning environment for me? Should I choose a Piano tutor who is a native speaker?

One of the best ways to learn Piano is to immerse yourself in an environment where you try to use only Piano.

However, if you do not currently have a solid base in spelling and/or vocabulary, we recommend you choose a bilingual tutor who speaks your target language and your native language, as you will likely have a better learning experience during your one-on-one private tutoring.

If you have a good range of vocabulary but lack the opportunity to practice, then we recommend you choose a native Piano tutor.
Q5. Learn Piano in the US - how do I find a local or online tutor?

You're in the right place. We have local Piano tutors serving New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose and most other areas nationwide, as well as numerous tutors based internationally.
Q6. How much will my online Piano class cost?

All tutoring fees are set by the Piano tutors themselves, and not by AT. Most of our Piano tutors charge USD$10-30 per hour.

You can also get matched with suitable Piano tutors who fit a specific budget. If the tutor’s fees work for you, you can buy a lesson package from them or start with a “trial lesson.”
Q7. How do I pay for my Piano lessons?

You can pay with PayPal or credit card (American Express, Mastercard, or Visa). For certain international markets (e.g. Taiwan), we also accept local methods of payment, such as payment via ATM or convenience store.
Q8. How many Piano lessons should I purchase?

If you have a short term goal, we recommend you purchase enough lessons that you can take classes consistently within your timeframe. If you need significant improvement to reach your goal, we recommend you an adequate number of lessons, and get into the habit of regular weekly learning! The more you put in, the more you get out of it!
