A popular slang term used in the late 1980's and 1990's

Narly, is an expression used when something is cool or neat. It is mostly used in American culture among teens or those who like to surf or skateboard in the 80's or 90's. I haven't hear the expression in today's slang.

That wave was totally narly dude! I made a narly jump on the track. Your friend is narly, dude. That movie was narly man.

The slang expression Narly, is usually followed by the word dude which means a guy or friend. Totally is sometimes prefaced with narly. Narly is not a popular slang word anymore but you can hear it in late 80' or early 90's movies or books. Look for movies about surfing or skating.

"Gnarly" (pronounced nar-lee) is an adjective that formally means "twisted" and informally means "difficult/challenging." One may say that a tree's branches are "gnarly" if the branches are twisted. In popular culture, "gnarly" is often used by people who surf when describing water conditions. If someone tells you they surfed a "gnarly wave," it means that they were able to surf a challenging wave. A third meaning that someone might use is as a way to say that something is excellent or incredible, taking on the same meaning as the slang terms "cool" and "rad."
