Hello, I am Professor Lilly and I was born in France. I have just obtained my engineering degree in bioinformatics and now work in the University of Hong Kong. My five years of studies allow me to have perspective on teaching and what methods adopted according to the needs and personality of the student since I myself was one not so long ago! If you need support in French, whether in grammar, conjugation, spelling, or general culture of the French language, I can develop courses for you adapted to your needs. FLE (French as a Foreign Language) program For my courses, I use the objectives of the different French certificates such as the TCF (Test de Connaissance du Français), the DILF (Diplôme Initial en Langue Française), the DELF (Diplôme d'Etudes en Langue Française), or the DALF (Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française). Below you will find the objectives to reach according to your level (applicable to pass the exams I presented above!). 📕 The A1 level corresponds to a real discovery level of the language (60 to 80 hours of French). The learner must be able to : - understand familiar words, common expressions about himself, his family and his immediate environment, in very simple sentences, - understand very simple authentic documents such as advertisements, posters, postcards, - take part in a basic conversation, if the interlocutor speaks slowly and reformulates, - ask and answer a few simple questions if the subject is very familiar - describe where he lives and the people he knows - write a very simple postcard of 3 or 4 sentences, as well as answer an informative questionnaire about himself. Generally, these are single sentences, - pronounced in an approximate way with many phonetic errors. 💡 In short, my classes will enable you to understand and use familiar, everyday expressions and very simple statements that aim to satisfy concrete needs. You will be able to introduce yourself or someone else and ask questions about where they live, who they know, what they own. You will be able to answer the same type of questions. Finally, you will be able to communicate in a simple way if the interlocutor speaks slowly and distinctly and is cooperative. 📕 Level A2 corresponds to an intermediate or common level (about 200 hours of learning). The A2 learner should be able to : - understand expressions and a very frequent lexicon related to him/herself, his/her family, his/her immediate environment (family, shopping, work, school, etc.), - understand simple, clear, short messages, - find predictable information in common documents, such as advertisements, leaflets, menus, schedules, simple personal letters - communicate in simple and routine tasks, with a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar topics and activities - communicate in a brief manner in general, while still making phonetic errors - can write short, simple notes and messages, a very simple personal letter, such as a thank you. 💡 You will be able to understand isolated sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (personal or family information, shopping, local environment, work). You can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. You can describe in simple terms your background, your immediate environment and talk about familiar and routine matters. 📕 Level B1 is the threshold level. The learner is able to "get by" in a number of situations (approximately 380 hours of learning). The B1 learner is able to : - understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school and leisure, - understand the main points of various radio and television programs on current affairs and topics of interest, - understand texts written mainly in everyday language or related to his/her work, - understand the description of events, the expression of feelings and wishes, - cope with most situations encountered on trips, - talk about familiar topics or topics of personal interest (family, travel, hobbies, current events), - express themselves in a simple way to tell about experiences and events, dreams, hopes or goals - give reasons or explanations for opinions or plans - tell a story, the plot of a book or a movie - express his/her reactions, - write simple, coherent text on topics that are familiar or of interest to them - write personal letters describing experiences and impressions. 💡 In short, you will be able to understand the main points when clear, standard language is used for familiar matters at work, school and leisure. You will be able to cope with most situations encountered while traveling in a region where the language is spoken. You will be able to produce simple, coherent speech on familiar topics and in your areas of interest. Finally, you will be able to recount an event, experience or dream, describe a hope or goal, and briefly give reasons or explanations for a project or idea. 📕 The B2 level corresponds to an advanced level, called independent. The student begins to demonstrate fluency in many situations. This level generally represents 550 to 600 hours of language learning. The B2 learner is able to - understand lectures and fairly long speeches, even follow complex arguments if the topic is familiar, - understand most television programs on current events and news. - understand most films in standard language, - read articles and reports on contemporary issues, with some point of view, - understand contemporary literary prose, - communicate with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers possible - can actively participate in conversation in familiar situations, - present and defend his/her opinions, - express him/herself clearly and in detail on a wide range of subjects related to his/her interests - develop a point of view on a current topic and explain the advantages and disadvantages of different options - write clear, detailed texts on topics related to his/her interests - write an essay or report, conveying information or giving reasons for or against a given opinion - write formal letters, in which he/she makes a case. 💡 You will be able to understand the essential content of concrete or abstract topics in a complex text, including a technical discussion in his or her field. You will be able to communicate with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes conversation with a native speaker stress-free for you and him/her. You will be able to express yourself clearly and in detail on a wide range of topics, and you will be able to give an opinion on a current topic and explain the advantages and disadvantages of different options. 📕 The C1 level corresponds to what is called a level of autonomy. The student begins to demonstrate a high degree of fluency and spontaneity, which can only be achieved after 750 to 850 hours of language learning. The C1 level learner is able to : - understand a long speech, even if it is not clearly structured and the articulation is implicit, - understand television programs and films without too much effort - understand long, complex literary texts and appreciate differences in style, - understand specialized articles and long technical instructions even when they are not related to his/her field, - express himself/herself spontaneously and fluently without having to search too much for words, - use the language flexibly and effectively in social and professional relationships, - express ideas and opinions accurately, - present clear and detailed descriptions of complex subjects, elaborating on certain points and ending appropriately - express themselves in clear, well-structured text and develop their point of view - write on complex subjects in a letter, an essay, a report, underlining the important points, - adopt a style adapted to the recipient. 💡 You will understand a wide range of long and demanding texts, while grasping implicit meanings. You will be able to express yourself spontaneously and fluently without having to search too hard for words. You will be able to use the language effectively and flexibly in your social, professional and academic life. You will be able to express yourself on complex topics in a clear and well-structured manner and demonstrate control of the tools of organization, articulation and cohesion of discourse. It is important to note that this level requires the student to be able to argue, to express him/herself without real difficulty and to possess an analytical mind. 📕 The C2 level corresponds to the level of mastery of the language. The student is able to perform advanced academic tasks. Students with more than 1000 hours of learning can take this level. The C2 level learner is able to: - understand oral language, whether in live or media conditions, even when speaking quickly, - read without effort any type of text, even abstract or complex in content or form (textbook, specialized article or literary work) - participate effortlessly in a discussion, being at ease with idiomatic expressions - express themselves fluently and accurately, - make fine distinctions in meaning in speech, - can present a clear and fluent description or argument in a style appropriate to the context - construct a presentation logically and help the listener notice and remember important points, - write clear, fluent text in a style appropriate to the context - write complex letters, reports or articles with a clear construction - summarize and criticize in writing a professional work or a literary work. 💡 You will be able to understand almost anything you say/read or hear without effort. You will be able to summarize facts and arguments from a variety of written and oral sources in a coherent manner. You will be able to express yourself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, and to distinguish fine nuances of meaning in relation to complex subjects. Courses To begin with, we will discuss together your study path and your objectives (professional, personal, leisure, academic, etc.). Then, I will evaluate your level with a quick quiz that will allow me to place you on the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) scale that I described above (A1/A2/B1/B2/C1/C2). Then, I will prepare courses adapted to your level to progress to the next level. These are generally structured as follows: -Presentation (this could be grammar rules, conjugation, etc. or a text, a film, a music according to your level and the progress of the course) -Discussions (in the form of a dialogue, reading of a play, presentation of a project you have done, etc.). The goal here is to speak to practice the language. -Feedback. I will give you, here, the elements that you will have to deepen for the continuation. I will give you advice on reading, and movies to watch to progress (always adapted to your level). -Written exercises. We will do some exercises together to understand the functioning and the structure of the language. I will suggest you to do some on your own. If you don't have time, we can do one or two during our sessions. Important to note: since a language is a way to communicate, it is always more interesting to discuss a predefined topic. Thus, my classes will never be only focused on the language itself but always on a precise subject which will allow you to discuss and learn. The topics can be chosen by you or can be about French culture in general (because a language is born from its culture, it would be a nonsense not to learn it). If you feel like teaming up with me, don't hesitate to contact me! :)
