Thank you for a wonderful trial lesson! I was slightly nervous in the beginning because my Japanese skills are basic, but Ayasen made me feel comfortable and gave me opportunities to speak. We had a delightful conversation while still focusing on the lesson and material. I am grateful. Thank you!

I like this lesson so much as it provides me lots of opportunities to chat in Japanese. It would be wonderful if teacher can spend some time to talk about the textbook as well. Many Thanks to my sensei.

Excellent experience. Lots of examples used, with many new vocabulary words. She explained things clearly and made it easy to understand. She uses slides, listening and speaking to learn grammar and vocabulary, as well as building speaking/listening confidence. I look forward to more classes with Hana.

Yasu-sensei is easy to talk to and very accommodating to my needs as a learner. He explains well when it comes to daily use of words, grammar, and meanings. I think English-speakers will learn well from him.

Grace is the loveliest teacher! She is very easy to talk to and I had such productive classes since the first day. Her English is very well, therefore, she is able to explain things I find difficult to understand in a simple way. I think that is really important for any beginner. I enjoy my everyday Japanese class with her and I could really see my improvement day by day, would recommend her to anyone who wants to learn Japanese!!

This lesson is quite difficult for me especially in the informal Japanese. However, it's good for me to know the Japanese culture and the way to communicate with them authentically.

Since this was our first lesson, Kaji sensei suggested we first test my Japanese N5 level before moving to the next level. We looked at the N5 vocab and grammar and he helped me with the grammar points I didn't understand. I also liked that he was patient while I was trying to use the grammar point and then gave me feedback on it.

Kaji sensei was really good to talk to. I am looking forward to more lessons with him! I was super nervous at the start as I have never done this but Kaji sensei made the experience less nervous. It’s always hard to learn a new language and scared of being judged and that feeling will always stop you from progressing. I felt at ease and not scared to make mistakes.

Learning with Miku-sensei is so motivating. I think it will be fun, yet serious too. Miku-sensei explains the words and also aims to speak in full Japanese during the classes, which encourages a lot to learn the vocabulary. This lesson was great!

I really appreciate Taeko san and how she teaches. Instead of having a strict lesson plan from the beginning, we learn from each other and she builds the lesson structure as we go along. Other students might prefer more structure, but for me this is okay because she allows me to tell her where I have the most difficulty, and then every next class we address that difficulty. I also like that I can ask a lot of questions, and I can even clarify cultural details to the Japanese expressions I learn in school and in my textbook.

Keeping a two and a half year olds attention is no easy task. My son clearly enjoyed the lesson, even when his attention would drift, he was still listening and engaged while his Mom and I were learning. Looking forward to the next class already!

Nari is fun and easy to talk to. I was a bit intimidated at first to learn a new language, but after the 1st lesson, I appreciated how she made the class feel relaxed. From class notes to optional homework, I found that she provided a good structure for learning the material. Would definitely recommend Nari to anyone interested in learning Japanese!

She was very attentive to my goals and what I wanted to achieve. Super sweet and and has a unique (and I think more affective) approach of teaching. It pushes me more to apply myself and I am ready to learn and push myself to achieve my goals.

If you have a clear idea of your criteria for choosing a tutor - such as any specific learning objectives, target cost for tutoring, etc. - you can use the search function to quickly find a tutor who suits your needs, and select “book trial” to set up your first online lesson.

If you don't have time to find a tutor or aren't sure where to start, we can help with recommendations. Try using our tutor recommendation tool here, which will provide you with tutor matches according to your selected needs.
Q4. What's the right learning environment for me? Should I choose a tutor who is a native speaker?

One of the best ways to learn is to immerse yourself in an environment where you try to use only .

However, if you do not currently have a solid base in spelling and/or vocabulary, we recommend you choose a bilingual tutor who speaks your target language and your native language, as you will likely have a better learning experience during your one-on-one private tutoring.

If you have a good range of vocabulary but lack the opportunity to practice, then we recommend you choose a native tutor.
Q5. Learn in the US - how do I find a local or online tutor?

You're in the right place. We have local tutors serving New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose and most other areas nationwide, as well as numerous tutors based internationally.
Q6. How much will my online class cost?

All tutoring fees are set by the tutors themselves, and not by AT. Most of our tutors charge USD$10-30 per hour.

You can pay with PayPal or credit card (American Express, Mastercard, or Visa). For certain international markets (e.g. Taiwan), we also accept local methods of payment, such as payment via ATM or convenience store.
Q8. How many lessons should I purchase?

If you have a short term goal, we recommend you purchase enough lessons that you can take classes consistently within your timeframe. If you need significant improvement to reach your goal, we recommend you an adequate number of lessons, and get into the habit of regular weekly learning! The more you put in, the more you get out of it!
