“Circumcised” describes a penis from which the foreskin—the fold of skin that normally covers the tip (glans)—has been surgically removed. The procedure is called circumcision and can be performed shortly after birth, during childhood, or later in life by a trained clinician. People choose circumcision for religious or cultural reasons (for example in Jewish and Muslim traditions), for personal or family preference, or for medical reasons such as recurring infections, persistent foreskin problems, or specific urological concerns. Medical studies show circumcision can slightly reduce the risk of some conditions (for example, urinary tract infections in infants and certain sexually transmitted infections in some populations), but it also carries risks and tradeoffs. Possible risks include pain, bleeding, infection, and cosmetic or functional changes; serious complications are uncommon when the procedure is done by an experienced provider. Aftercare normally involves keeping the area clean, following the provider’s wound-care instructions, and using recommended pain relief while the site heals. Because the benefits and risks vary with age, health, and personal or cultural priorities, decisions about circumcision are usually made by the individual (or the parents/caregivers) in consultation with a healthcare professional who can explain options and aftercare.
