What does rely mean?

4 Respuestas

Rely = depend on

Rely is a lot like the word depend. If you rely on someone for help, you also depend on them. But rely is even more powerful! When you rely on someone, you depend on them with full trust or confidence.

It also could mean "be dependent on".

Examples:

  1. Your concern is touching, but I know I can rely on my friends. (I can depend on my friends, I fully trust them).

  2. Many individuals rely on sleeping medications to sustain a good night's sleep. (They are dependent on sleeping medications).

So...

Who can you rely on?

and...

What do you rely on?

When someone says they "rely" on you, that means that they trust you, confide in you, and have complete confidence in you! This is a great way to express trust and confidence. Instead of saying, "I trust and confide in you", you can more simply say, "I rely on you!"

To "rely" on someone or something shows its importance.

If we say that "the employees rely on the skills of the manager", then we know that the manager is very important! Without the manager, the employees do not have the confidence that they need to perform their jobs well.
