What does "AM" and "PM" stand for?

AM and PM are used to talk about the 12 hour clock. Many western countries do not use the 24 hour clock system and will instead split the day into 2 parts that are 12 hours each. AM and PM are abbreviations of Latin terms, AM meaning Ante meridiem (before noon) and PM meaning Post meridiem (after noon).

How do I know when to use each one?

When using a 12 hour clock system we need to use AM and PM to avoid confusion in conversations about time. To do this you should remember that 12 noon is the middle of the day and 12 midnight is the middle of the night. (Which is why it is called mid-night). If the time is before 12 noon but after 12 midnight, we use AM. If the time is after 12 noon but before 12 midnight, we use PM.

For example:

1. I will eat breakfast at 6am and dinner at 6pm.

2. My class starts at 9am and finishes at 3pm.

Remember to think if the time makes sense using AM or PM to help determine which one someone is talking about.

Not all people will say AM or PM when talking about time, this is often because they are talking about something that already implies whether they mean AM or PM. In my first example above, I could just say I had breakfast at 6. This is because we know breakfast is a morning meal, so we know it is 6am. The final confusions can come from whether to say 12am or 12pm for noon and midnight. While it is mostly accepted that 12pm is noon and 12 am is midnight, it is good practice to just use the words 12 noon and 12 midnight in place of AM or PM to avoid confusion.

For practice, think of 4-6 things you do every day. When do you do them? In the AM (before noon) or PM (after noon)? Good luck!

A.m. means ante meridiem in latin, which means before noon in English. P.m. means post meridiem, which means after noon in English. In formal writing, it is best to lowercase both a.m. and p.m. Make sure to keep the periods where they are!
