Yurie Samira Yamazaki YamashitaNov 24, 2024This time, we talked about the negative effects of social media, mainly X, which is now used to spread fake news, political propaganda, and even recruit youngsters into criminal activities such as thefts and homicides. I chose two articles about the issue. One is from BBC reporting the Guardian's decision to stop posting new articles on X because of their deep concerns on the platform's toxic aspects. Also, there is already an alternative platform called Bluesky founded by former employees of Twitter, other than Threads by Meta. I understand the decision by the Guardian because it seems that Elon Musk has changed the platform into a chaotic one, allowing Trump's account to come back and selling authentication badges, which may lead to giving authority to fake accounts pretending to be public sectors or celebrities. Another is from Asahi Shimbun, the largest Japan's liberal paper. It explained how fake accounts have spread demagoges on X about Kurdish people living in Saitama. Unfortunately, many Japanese people are naive to issues of immigrants and refugees, and they easily believe what is popular on X without stopping to think and look up for certified information by themselves. After the class, it was reported that Australia was going to ban the usage of social media of children under 16. Other developed nations, including Japan, should consider such kind of regulation against social media sincerely.
KatyNov 15, 2024Feedback: For today’s session, we didn’t have a specific topic or goal, so it turned into a relaxed, cozy conversation. With Mr. Miguel’s rich background in various countries and cultures, I couldn’t help but ask him a lot of questions. It would be helpful if Mr. Miguel could regularly prompt me to explain or share my personal opinions. I’d really appreciate having the chance to think more deeply and express myself further. // Today's Lesson We talked about what we usually have for breakfast. I also wondered about typical Japanese breakfasts. In the second part of the lesson, we discussed instant food. Mr. Miguel mentioned that there are many more options for frozen meals in the U.S., including instant pot dishes and frozen dinners, due to the wide variety of seasonings available. (Mr. Miguel usually cooks for himself and has about thirty different seasonings! He mainly prepares Hispanic food.) Finally, we clarified the differences between “seasonings,” “herbs,” and “spices.” After class, I couldn’t wait to enjoy my gourd and mushroom soup!
