ā I can teach ā€¦ āœ” Students seeking to level up their general English proficiency āœ” Students seeking to enhance their communication skills in business settings āœ” Students seeking to achieve proper use of English grammar and improve their writing skill ā Personal bio My journey learning English as a second language all the way up to the fluency level of native speakers provided me with valuable insights in understanding the struggles many English learners face. If I were to describe English learning, it is like building a house. Although students often despise learning grammar, it is the foundation on which the right use of vocabularies and phrases makes up a studentā€™s overall communication skill. I think having a sound grammar foundation is crucial for students to express their thoughts and feelings effectively. I first tackled grammar when I started learning English in Singapore at a young age. After spending some time studying English grammar, learning the two active (speaking; writing) and two passive (reading; listening) skills came naturally. As the saying goes ā€œlose it if you donā€™t use itā€, I then sought ways to keep my English functional. I found a job where I can use English on a daily basis. This was very helpful in permanently retaining my English proficiency as well as learning Business English. After achieving the required level of English to attend a college in English speaking countries, I went to pursue a bachelorā€™s degree in Economics in the United States. My experience obtaining a college degree in the United States helped me complete the final finish in building my metaphorical house of learning English. Upon receiving my bachelorā€™s degree, I decided to continue my educational journey by attending a masterā€™s degree program in Taiwan. The intense learning environment of writing academic papers and attending lectures on professional subjects in my both undergraduate and graduate programs equipped me with the skills to fully comprehend via reading and listening and express myself in spoken and written forms, even in highly complex professional topics. In my college years, I was immersed in native English speaking environment both academically and professionally. During this time, I got familiarized with English idioms, professional terms and phrases all of which helped me become an effective communicator. I have been teaching English since I came to Taiwan for about two years both in one-on-one and group settings. Much of my teaching experience has been with Gjun language school where I met many great students. From my teaching experience, I have seen that the skill level of my students are different in different areas. For example, some students are good at pronunciation, but they fail to use the correct grammar to express their thoughts clearly. Some students have strong grammar, but they lack the necessary vocabularies to express themselves completely. Some students possess a wide range of vocabularies, but they use inappropriate vocabularies in the context. The existence of these differences made me realize that itā€™s important to customize my teaching approach to effectively address the weak skill areas of my students. In my opinion, the best way to learn English is to practice what you learned in real life. ā What can you get out of my course? āœ” Improved verbal communication skills āœ” Boost of confidence engaging in a wide range of conversation topics āœ” Advanced reading and listening comprehension in complex technical topics ā Class structure Drawing from my teaching experience, I structured my classes into the following five sections to comprehensively address the essential communication skills. āœ” Discussion: We start out thoroughly discussing the class topic to gain full comprehension and multi-dimensional perspective. This is important for thinking critically when working the interactive exercises that follow next. āœ” Listening: Every chapter of the textbook in both business and general English courses has a listening section where students listen to a conversation related to the topic of the class. The speakers in the listening section have various accents which makes it challenging, yet practical for students to comprehend what is expressed. This is a part where I help students learn many useful phrases, analogies, and professional terms commonly used in English. āœ” Role play: This is the part the verbal skills learned from the previous sections are applied as students take a role and engage in a dialogue with the teacher on certain topic. This is a fun and effective way for students to practice what they learned by thinking from the perspective of their assigned role. āœ” Grammar: To wrap up the class, we go over useful sentence patterns and phrases unique in each chapter. Students are encouraged to practice the learning contents of this section after the class and apply in their verbal communication. āœ” Writing homework: At the end of each chapter, students are given the option to do a short writing homework. Students can choose to do the chapterā€™s homework depending on their learning needs. I help my students proofread their written homework and correct any grammar mistakes and compositional unclarity. ā Teaching style You can be sure to find a practical learning environment where the learning contents are systematically practiced in real-life contexts. Your learning needs will be met with custom designed lesson plans focused on helping students retain the acquired knowledge and skills from the course. Most importantly, you will have fun throughout your learning experience. I highly encourage my students to express themselves not only because I love to catch up with them after the last class, but also because self-expression is the best way to improve your verbal communication skills. I seek to create relaxed atmosphere in my classes and establish friendship with my students. This way, my nitpicking of grammar and vocabulary appropriateness help students learn to properly use English in telling real-life stories. Furthermore, I emphasize taking the time and delve into the cases and stories of the class with my students, so that they can comprehend not just the definition of what is expressed but also the meaning of it. An unexpected change of plan happens to everyone. Students can flexibly reschedule their class by giving daysā€™ notice and we pick up right where we left off in the next class.
