What does it's mean?
Most English students confuse "its" and "it's" from time to time!
"It's" as "it is"
It's can be the contraction (short form) for "It is".
It's nice outside. It's a pen. (It's in this case, can be followed by an "Adjective or a noun"
"It's" as "it has" (present perfect)
It's can also be the contraction for "It has" as a present perfect. You know that in present perfect you need the PP formation of the verb.
For example, It's been hard for him recently! (been is a PP of the verb is).
"Its" as a possessive adjective
Possessive adjectives show the possession of sb/sth.
It is my cat. "my" is a possessive adjective. It requires a Noun after that.
In this sentence:
I have a dog and this is its water bowl. It means the water bowl that belongs to the dog. Look at that cat. Its tail is orange! the cat's tail.
"Its" as a possessive pronoun
mine, yours, his, hers, its, ours, theirs
This group of pronouns is called possessive pronouns. They are considered nouns and can occupy their place. Look at the following examples:
That computer is mine. Where is my computer? Yours is over there.
That bone belongs to that dog. It's its. :)
It's
Its is a contraction for it is. You can (and should!) use it in almost all casual situations. It is not the same as its which is only used if someone or something exists or "owns" something.

Its purse is over there on the bench.
Its going to be angry if it hears you!

Its is a possessive pronoun, indicating that something belongs to "it".

"Its" indicates that the toy belongs to the pronoun "it".
In conclusion
Unless you are indicating possession, remember to put an apostrophe on "it's".
It's 🤷🏻♂️
This is a simple contraction. In English, we take certain subject words like I, You, He, She, It, We and They, and join them with the be verb (is/am/are - was/were) to say things more quickly.
How it works
It's = It + is
It (a thing / a place / a situation) + is (be verb for he/she/it)
The apostrophe ( ' ) is used to write this contraction.
BE CAREFUL!
If you don't use the apostrophe ( ' ), you will change meaning completely. "Its" means something different.
Examples and Practice
It's
A: "I am really sorry that I forgot to call you yesterday."
B: "It's okay. I was really busy anyway."
Conclusion
This is a very basic rule, but also very important. Learn how to use the apostrophe ( ' ) in many other kinds of contractions like:
You're | You + are |
---|---|
I'm | I + am |
They're | They + are |
He's | He + is |
Meaning of "It's"
The Meaning of It's
"It's" is a contraction of "it is." For example, "It is hot." We can also say "It's hot." "It's" is usually used informally or during conversation. On the other hand, "It is" will typically be used formally as well as informally.
Its a wonderful day? It's a wonderful day!
It's? or Its?
When do we use it's with an apostrophe? (')
Apostrophes are used for two reasons:
to indicate that two words have been joined and letters have been left out (a contraction) or
to show possession (that something belongs to someone or something).
When you see it's, it indicates a contraction.
It + is = it's
When I joined the two words together namely it and is, I needed to leave out the second "i". I use my apostrophe (') to indicate that a letter has been left out.
Its is a possessive pronoun, and is actually used to show that something belongs to something else.
The dog licked its puppies.
The puppies in this sentence belong to the dog.
The pronoun, it, replaces the dog.
Therefore its is a possessive pronoun.
Do you use its or it's for the following sentences?
Its/It's a sunny day.
(It's) = It is a sunny day.
Its/It's my new kitten!
(It's) - It ls my new kitten.
It's/It's name is Fluffy.
(Its) - Its name is Fluffy - the name Fluffy belongs to "it".
It's not so complicated after all.
Once you understand that the apostrophe in "it's" shows the contraction of it is, you'll never get confused again.
"It's" and "its" can often be confusing.
It's a Contraction.
The word "it's" is a contraction. It means "it is." This word is often confused with the word "its," which is a possessive pronoun that means something belongs to it.
Example Sentences
It's a beautiful day today!
What is it? It's a dog.
Don't Forget the Apostrophe!
When you want to say "it is" in a shorter way, you can use the contraction "it's." The apostrophe takes the place of the missing letter 'i' from the word "is," so don't forget it!
It is a shortened version of two words. We love to squeeze sounds together when we speak. It is not good practice to use shorter words within written work.
It's = contraction of 'it is'
We can say (it's) within a spoken sentence, for example; 'It's raining outside."
It's is the shortcut for "It is".
It is different from the word "its" which pertains to the possessive form of no gender.
Example: The dog is in its cage.
It's a good day to buy some meat in the market.
The difference between 'it's' and 'its'
The word 'it's' is a contraction, or shortened version of two words, meaning 'it is'. It is used when a letter is extracted, and two words are made into one, to shorten speech.
Eg. "It is raining outside " would become "It's raining outside".
It should not be confused with the word 'its', which means possession. Eg. "The dog chased its own tail."
The tail belongs to the dog, and adding the 's' thus shows possession. 'His' shows male possession, while 'her' shows female possession, and 'its' shows unknown gender (usually an inanimate object or an animal) possession.
It's = It is/It has
"It's" is a contraction (short for) of "it is" or "it has".
When followed by an adjective or adverb ’s = is.
When followed by an article + noun ’s = is.
When followed by an -ing verb ’s = is.
When followed by a past participle ’s = has OR is.
(we have to understand the meaning from the context of the whole sentence).
For example:
It’s over there. It's huge! (it’s = it is)
It's a bus. (it’s = it is)
It’s falling down! (it’s = it is)
Oh no! It's gone! (it's = it is)

He doesn’t think it’s a good idea to spend all his money on video games. (it is a ...)
It’s been a year since the last time they met. (It has been...)
Don't confuse: it's and its.
They are pronounced the same, there’s a very small difference in how they’re written, and it’s also easy to mistake the contraction in it’s for a possessive. But the rules are very clear—it’s is the same type of contraction as “where’s” or “there’s,” and its is a possessive just like “my” or “your.”
it's and its
It's - contraction of it is /possessive pronoun
its - determiner

It is a contraction and should be used where a sentence should read "it is".
